Foynes Flying Boat Museum

The Foynes Flying Boat Museum is located in Foynes close to Shannon and Limerick. The museum is housed in the original terminal building that once sheltered the most romantic ships of the sky – the flying boats. The famous Pan Am Clippers once used Foynes as their gateway to Europe from North America to stop, re-fuel and rest before flying onwards. Guests of the Park Inn by Radisson Shannon Airport can plan a fun day out exploring the history of the flying boats

The history of Foynes
Foynes is well-known, not just for the beautiful planes that once graced the shores of the lake, but also for the famous people who transited through and also for the invention of Irish coffee. As with many great inventions, providence and the weather both had a part to play in its creation. In 1943 on a stormy winter's night a flight recently departed for the Newfoundland coast found itself in bad weather conditions and forced to return to Foyles. On return and in response to a plea for food and drink to warm the crew and passengers Chef Jo Sheridan presented them with hot coffee laced with Irish whiskey. Joe went on to refine his drink by putting it into a stem glass with a smooth creamy head and so Irish coffee was born.
